  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Allan Roy Sefton (1921–1989) was an electrical engineering draughtsman with Australian Iron & Steel Pty Ltd (BHP) at Port Kembla but was best known as a highly respected ornithologist, naturalist and environmentalist with an international reputation. His work was mainly in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. In 1975 he was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community as a natural historian, ecologist, conservationist and ornithologist and three years later he was the recipient of the Australian Natural History Medallion. In 1989 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to conservation and an honorary doctorate of philosophy from the University of Wollongong. In 1993 the annual Allan Sefton Memorial Lecture was instituted in his memory at the University of Wollongong.
