General note

Smyth was a mate on H.M.S. Blossom; see the account of the voyage by Beechey, F.W., 'Narrative of a voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait ... ', London, H. Colburn & R. Bentley, 1831. Some of the illustrations in Beechey's book are from drawings by Smyth.

Three of these sketches appear to be the originals from which etchings by Robert Batty were made. Copies of the etchings are filed at DG SV8.1/4-15; these were used to illustrate 'The eventful history of the mutiny and piratical seizure of H.M.S. Bounty ... ', London, Murray, 1831. In this book two of the illustrations (frontispiece, and opposite p. 317) are attributed to originals by 'Lieut. Smith of H.M.S. Blossom'.

Signatures / Inscriptions

None of the sketches is signed, one is dated '1826' and the remainder are undated; all are either titled or have descriptive notes. Inside the front cover is the following ink inscription 'Wm. Smyth H.M.S. Blossom off Pitcairn's Island Decr. 4th. 1825 Sunday'.
