John Garnett arrived in Sydney in 1884 after working in Huddersfield, England as a stonemason. He won tenders to build or restore many buildings in Sydney and New South Wales including private houses, churches, banks, mausoleums and schools. He was awarded many contracts by the New South Wales Department of Public Works including restoration work on Government House and the Mitchell Library. Garnett built the pediments for the Shakespeare statue group, and the statues of Matthew Flinders and Sir Richard Bourke, in its present position. By this time a company had been formed: Garnett & Whiteoak Stonemasons Builders General Contractors, with quarries in Coogee and Bondi.
