Born in Gilgandra in 1953 and raised in Mendooran, Gaye Chapman has widely exhibited artwork throughout Australia and overseas. She has exhibited and won prizes and awards for the Blake, Sulman, Fleurieu, Kedumba and Waterhouse Natural History art prizes. She has also worked extensively as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.

Gaye Chapman is also known as a children's illustrator and author of picture books and for her artwork for The School Magazine, which she began illustrating in 1989. She has won a number of awards for her books including the 2009 Queensland Premier's Literary Award for Children's Books for Little Blue, and has been short-listed for the 2006 Crichton Award by the Children's Book Council of Australia for Heart of the Tiger, and the 2008 Children's Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year Award for the collaborative book Dust.

She uses a variety of materials in her artwork including real objects like mud, feathers and grass, often employing a technique of cutting out finished paintings and pasting them down in new ways.
