    Private John Archibald Douglas Sommers, artist and author of Melbourne, Victoria, enlisted aged 36, 22 Aug. 1914 and embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A1 Hymettus, 22 Oct. 1914. He served with the 1st Division, Australian Army Service Corps in Egypt, Gallipoli and France. During 1915 he contributed verses to the Bulletin. He returned to Australia on the Balmoral Castle, 21 Mar. 1918
  • Scope and Content
    Includes letters written from Alexandria Dec. 1914, Mena Camp, Egypt Feb. 1915, Lemnos April 1915, Gallipoli May 1915, Egypt Jan. 1916 and France Apr. 1916. Describes landing at Gallipoli, military action in Flanders May 1915, campaign against the Senussi tribesmen in Egypt at Matruh July 1915-Feb. 1916 and behind the front lines in a field hospital in France 23 April 1916.
