The subjects of three of the sketches were identified by the previous owner.
At the period when the portraits were taken, J.K. Mackay was the owner of Cangon Station, Dungog ('Australian Pastoral Directory', 1927, p.111).

Two of the sketches, f.1 and f.2, are inscribed 'Minns Cangon June 26'.
The remaining sketches are neither signed nor dated. None of the sketches are titled.

Although the inscription 'Minns' on sketches f.1 and f.2 are different from B.E. Minn's signature on the other, finished works in the collection, all the sketches are believed by the previous owner, who was the subject of two of the portrait sketches, to be by B.E. Minns.
