  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Meryon, artist and engraver, sailed as a first class cadet in corvette 'Le Rhin' (commanded by Captain Bernard) for New Zealand in 1842 (ca. August). He was stationed there at Akaroa till 1846 when 'Le Rhin' returned to France, but her crew did make a number of cruises from New Zealand.
There is evidence that Meryon was in Sydney in a letter in which he wrote 'I provided myself when in Sydney with wax and plaster of Paris' (Quoted in 'The Emigrant', editors H. Bolitho and J. Mulgan, pp. 49-).
