German-born Henry Mayer (1919-1991) joined the Department of Government and Public Administration, University of Sydney, in 1950. He was appointed Professor of Political Theory in 1970 and held this position until his retirement in 1984. He became renowned for his prodigious feats as a researcher, lecturer, writer and bibliographer in the the discipline of political science and the wider social sciences. From 1966 to 1980 he edited five successive editions of Australian Politics: A Reader. His book The Press in Australia (1964) was a landmark publication in the early academic study of the Australian mass media.
