  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Gregory Grant John Macintosh was a sculptor who studied with Lucien Henry and taught at Sydney Technical College.

    Thomas Edward Castle (1864-1918) was a sergeant in Bethune's Mounted Infantry in the Boer War 1899-1902. He was killed in World War I.

    Photograph album of Sergeant Thomas Edwin Castle, relating to Bethune's Mounted Infantry during the Boer War, 1899-1901. Includes portraits of Sergeant Castle and a newscutting "Bethune's Mounted Infantry. Description of the Memorial". A pencil inscription on the inside front cover reads: "The Great ambush at Vryheid near Newcastle, when Boers surrounded the bivouac camp when orders to save themselves who could. Only the ones in front picture succeeded. T.E.C. [Thomas Edwin Castle] & wounded man reach camp at 2 a.m. others came in next day. T.E.C. was an Aus. Surveyor & expert bushman."

    Memorial plaque honouring Thomas Edward [Edwin] Castle. Issued to next-of-kin of servicemen killed in the war. It shows Britannia holding a trident and standing with a lion. In her left hand she holds an oak wreath above a rectangular tablet bearing Castle's name. Two dolphins swim around Britannia and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. Around the rim are the words "He died for freedom and honour". Designed by Edward Carter Preston, ca. 1920
