  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Lady Tollemache was the daughter of Robert Henley, 1st Earl of Northington, Lord Chancellor. Lady Tollemache's brother Robert, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, succeeded to the title in 1772. He died a bachelor in 1786 and his estate was divided between Lady Bridget Tollemache, Lady Jane Aston, Mary Countess Ligonier and Lady Elisabeth Eden.

    George Scott was a Commissioner of Excise from 1758-1780. He was a barrister and a celebrated mathematician. The Reverend Joshua Parry was a Presbyterian minister in Cirencester.

    Dr Caleb Hillier Parry (1755–1822) was a physician, born at Broad Gates, Gloucester Street, Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

    1. Letter from Lady Tollemache to unknown correspondent, 28 July 1791
    The letter describes her health and her visits to Winchester races and her sisters. She also comments on current events including riots at Birmingham and the French King and Queen. She mentions a number of people, the Prince of Wales, Captain Charles Fitzroy, Lord Landsdowne, Captain Fitzroy and Dr Priestley.
