  • Scope and Content
    The volume includes twenty five sketches by Lempriere of which nineteen are signed 'T.J.L.' or 'T.J. Lempriere'. Other sketches, signed by members of the Ross family, are of European views.
    Also included are ten photographs dated ca. 1912, by John Watt Beattie of original paintings of Macquarie Harbour, Hobart, Port Arthur and the 'Lady Franklin', five of which are by Charles Astley dated '97' (DGA 64 vol. 2, ff. 1-10).

    The Lempriere sketches include views of Maria Island (ff. 7, 60), coal mines on Tasman peninsula (f. 21), the Derwent Valley (ff. 43, 57), Norfolk Bay (f. 23), Storm Bay (f. 17), the convict railway (f. 39), sketches and photographs of Port Arthur (ff. 25, 26, 63, 65, 66), views in Macquarie Harbour (ff. 40, 41, 61), Mount Wellington (f. 49), and of Sir John Franklin (f. 51).
    A manuscript letter to the artist from R. Neill dated 25th October, 1836 is at f. 12. Some sketches are drawn directly into the volume, others pasted in or hinged.
