    Mellish (Ship)
  • Date note

    Not after 1839

The Mellish visited Sydney between 1829 and 1840. Huggins was appointed Marine painter to the King 1834, and works later than this date generally bear this information. The fact that this aquatint does not, suggests that it could have been published before 1834. However, the original oil (photograph copy in SHIPS FILE) bears a label giving the date 'c.1835' and Mrs Reinhardt of the Parker Gallery London, who held the painting in 1965, gives the following information: [the oil is] signed W.J. Huggins', and it is the original painting for which the aquatint was engraved by E. Duncan and published circa 1839' (ML Corres. 992/62)
