    This watercolour is one of three in the same style, the other two being Frome Bridge, Adelaide and Port Adelaide, South Australia. The paper of the three is the same and that of the Port Adelaide view shows the watermark date 1845

    Signed 'STG' but the signature could be spurious
    Title in pencil below picture within a pencil line
    A pencil sketch of the main buildings shown in the picture with inscriptions 'My store', ',My dwelling', both signed 'ELM'.
  • Attributions / conjectures

    'ELM' could be E.L. Montefiore who was a merchant in King William street ca. 1846-9, see covering card under Montefiore.
    An examination of sketchbooks in Mitchell Library attributed to him did not prove conclusive. See also notes by K.T. Borrow, 1953, A4002, p.3
    Mr Pitt (Public Library South Australia) identified the side street as Grenfell Street
