John Tierney was an author who published four collections of short stories First Furrow (1944), Cookabundy Bridge (1946, awarded the S. H. Prior memorial prize), The Bunyip of Barney's Elbow (1956) and The Big Burn (1965). His two novels, The Advancement of Spencer Button (1950) and Hopeton High (1963), drew on his experiences as a schoolteacher. He also published many short stories for The Bulletin under the pseudonym of Brian James and edited Selected Australian Stories (Melbourne, 1959) and Australian Short Stories (London, 1963). The Bulletin is where he met Douglas Stewart and Norman Lindsay who became a close friend. Norman Lindsay thought of John Tierney as the finest Australian writer of imaginative prose since Lawson.
