- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
In 2001 the Library Council of New South Wales commissioned Jan Bowen to research and write a book on the history of the Garling Family in Australia, according to the terms of the Bequest of Miss Jean Garling. She was chosen as the Jean Garling historian and produced `Legacy of a Lawyer'. The manuscript was completed in 2005. - Scope and ContentThis extensive historical and genealogical research of the Garling family focuses on their contribution to the professional and cultural life of New South Wales. The manuscript begins with the arrival of Frederick Garling Senior in 1815 as the colony's first Crown Solicitor. It is then followed by his son Frederick Garling junior who was employed as an offiical in the Customs Department in Sydney but made his name as a notable watercolour artist. The final chapter describes the life of Jean Garling the great-great grandaughter of Frederick Garling, and a major benefactor of the State Library of New South Wales.
