    Halim El-Dabh, composer, was born in Cairo on 4 March, 1921, From 1941-1944 he studied piano and Western music at the Sulcz Cons. in Cairo. On a Fulbright scholarship he went to the USA in 1950 where he studied composition with Aaron Copland and Irving Fine at the Berkshire Music Centre at Tanglewood. El-Dabh became a naturalised American citizen in 1961. His teaching posts include Haile Selassie University in Ethiopa (1962-1964), Howard University (1966-1969) and Kent State University, Ohio (from 1969). He became co-director of Kent State University Centre for the study of world music in 1979.
