• General note
  
  Library records note that two newspaper cuttings of letters from J.E. Calder dated 25th and 26th November, 1874, to The Mercury referring to the lithograph, were on the verso of the frame; the cuttings are now attached to the back of the mount.
  
  This is probably the lithograph held by Calder which is referred to in J. W. Beattie's letter of 26 June, 1919 (At 29/2).

  The word 'Davey's' and the date '1816' are ruled through; 'Arthur's' is written in ink above 'Davey's' and '1830' beneath '1816'.
  'No such conversation as this ever took place JEC' [i.e. J.E. Calder] is inscribed after lithographed inscription beneath image.
