  • General note

This three-quarter portrait shows signs of having been cut down.

A full length painting of Florence Rodway by Norman Carter, titled `A Low-toned Harmony', was awarded the Bronze Medal, Salon des Artistes Francais, Paris, 1913.

Gestural brushstrokes, lighting and shading, appear to be similar in the three-quarter work, described here, and in the full length portrait, `A Low-toned Harmony' reproduced in The Salon (1913).

`A Low-toned Harmony' was exhibited in Tho Royal Art Society's thirty-first annual exhibition in August 1910. In the Sydney Morning Herald, the sitter, Florence Rodway, is described as wearing `a dark mauve walking costume' with one `gauntleted hand resting at arm's length on the top of her parasol ...' Reference:
    Sydney Morning Herald, 27 August 1910, p. 6

The current location of `A Low-toned Harmony' is not known. It is possible that this three quarter portrait has been cut down from the original full length portrait, `A Low-toned Harmony', possibly by the artist himself before presenting it to the Library collection in 1962.

A reproduction and description of `A Low-toned Harmony' is found in:
`Norman Carter, painter', by Leslie Beer, in The Salon : being the journal of the Institute of Architects of New South Wales; volume 2, number 4, November 1913, pp. 240-246
