Gilbert "Bertie" Doble sculpted in stone and modelled in clay, he also did his own bronzing by an electro-deposition process he perfected himself in his own studio at a time when most Australian sculptors had to send bronze jobs to be done overseas. Doble sculpted war memorials at Wellington, Pyrmont and Marrickville, regarding the Wellington War Memorial as his finest statuary group. At Bathurst he constructed the Evans memorial in 1919, notable for it's respectful depiction of an Aboriginal man crouched at Evans' knee - representing one of the Aboriginals who acted as a guide for Evans on his surveys. Doble also produced medals, shields and trophies. He did his own photography with a series of plate cameras that allowed him to copy his jobs on to glass negatives.
