  EDWARD GOSTWYCK COREY
  Extract from letter 9 Dec. 1970 from M.L. to Mr. F.Cory (M.L. 1271/70)
  ...The 1828 Census gives this information about Edward Gostwyck
  Cory: — aged 31, wife Frances 28, came in “Allies" 1823, owned vineyard cottage, Paterson’s Plains, total 4800 acres, 300 cleared and cultivated, 16 horses, 320 horned cattle. ...

  The original Australian Corys came here in SB “Allies” in 1823, Edward and Gilbert and John, from England (Cornwall or Devon I believe) and were given Land Grants near Paterson via Maitland, which they named “Vacy”, and from there they expanded their farming and pastoral interests, including extension of pastoral pursuits to the New England District, where they were the first to settle with stock the country over the Moonbie Ranges near Armidale. I believe both, if not one, are buried in Vacy Cemetery.

  The original Gory grant was about 5 to 6 miles out from Paterson which is about 12 to 14 miles from West Maitland. i.e. on the Paterson River near Maitland. The property and town was called Vacy. The Corys built the Hotel, The School of Arts, the Stores etc. there. Cory was her gandfather. Six Cory brothers went to Queensland where there are a anumber of properties. Gostywck Gory had a property West of Longreach and retired in Toowoomba. Alfred Gory had Stradbroke. Henry Cory had Vermont and he retired and lived in Warwick.
