Gilbert Patrick Hoskins was a private in the 9th Battalion AIF, part of the covering force for the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He produced a number of watercolours recording Allied naval operations from a viewpoint at an elevated post ashore.
  • Scope and Content
Shows an Allied warship, HMS Albion, which ran aground off Fort Gaba Tepe (or Kaba Tepe) on the night of 22-23 May 1915. Exchanging fire with the Turkish fort, the Albion is being towed off by HMS Canopus on 24 May 1915.

Two other watercolour drawings by Hoskins (SV*/Wor W I/5-6) show a similar view of the site of the Albion's grounding, and could be interpreted as forming a sequence with this view. SV*/Wor W I/5 is an annotated topographical view with no action depicted; SV*/Wor W I/6 shows HMS Albion under fire whilst aground near Gaba Tepe, with nearby vessels assisting.

Another version of this drawing, alike in all significant respects, was sold at Lawson-Menzies in 2007, suggesting the possibility that Hoskins produced more than one copy of a view in at least this instance.
