  • Scope and Content
    “The view is from the grounds of Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur’s new house, Vineyard, designed by John Verge. The jetty and landing place are in the foreground. Jervis notes that the three storey building, centre is the Commissariat Store in George Street. In 1836 the wall around it was erected as part of plans to convert it to a permanent military barrack … Elisabeth Farm and Experiment Farm are the two houses on the far left; Newlands, built by Samuel Marsden, is the two-storey building on the far right with Pemberton Grange beneath. Howell’s Mill is to the right of the gum tree."

    The ferry is one of three steamers plying between Parramatta and Sydney at the time: Experiment, Australia or possibly Emu.
