  • Scope and Content
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Italian Studies, University of Sydney, 2007

This thesis, including 8 illustrations, "analyses a body of texts written for two weekly columns edited by Lena Gustin, and published in the Italian Australian newspaper La Fiamma between 1956 and 1964. I consider, compare and contrast the texts published in the two columns and the original letters written by migrants to Gustin, focusing on material and discursive practices about the body. The analysis of the corpus is interdisciplinary in that it combines a historical approach, inspired by the work of Carlo Ginzburg, with philosophical suggestions, in particular the work of Slavo Zizek on popular culture and ideology, and the reflections of Elisabeth Grosz on the dichotomy between body and mind. Through this approach, I argue the importance of considering Italian migration from the distorted perspective of embodied, abject migrant subjects, also taking into account their spectral fantasies..."
