  • Scope and Content
Thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the History Program, School of Historical and European Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, La Trobe University, January 2007.

This thesis, including 17 illustrations, recounts how "Felton and Grimwade's Melbourne Glass Bottle Works, became successively the dominant national bottle maker, the initiator of other forms of glass manufacture in Australia including for the first time, locally made window glass, optical glass and fibreglass, and ultimately the country's largest manufacturing conglomerate. There are no world parallels for such diversification into cartons, plastics, engineering, metal forging, mining, printing and hand tool and axe making by a glass maker. Following an extraordinary period of successful growth under contrasting and colourful management, the Company overextended in the 1980s and became a target for takeover, resulting in glass making passing out of Australian ownership." (From Thesis Summary)

"One small enterprise, the Melbourne Glass Bottle Works, developed into an Australian icon first as a national manufacturer of bottles, Australian Glass Manufacturers (AGM) and from 1939 as Australian Consolidated Industries (ACI)." (From Introduction, p. 1)
