  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Charles Dickson Gregory was born ca. 1871 to George and Elizabeth Ann Gregory (nee Smith). He was a founding member of the Shiplover’s Society of Victoria, where he was the first vice-president in 1930. He was also a contributor to their annual publication, ‘The Annual Dog Watch’.

    His published works include, ‘Australian steamships : past and present’ / by Dickson Gregory ; with a foreword by Sir Granville Ryrie. London : The Richards Press, 1928; ‘The romance of the "Edina" : the world's oldest screw-steamship : with chapters on the auxiliary steamship "Great Britain", and the Port Phillip Bay Steamers past and present’ / by C. Dickson Gregory. Melbourne : Robertson & Mullens, 1935. On the fly-leaf to this publication, Gregory has been described by “his love for and his interest in shipping and his researches in shipping lore to which he has devoted his life, he has become the historian of Australian steamships”.

    He died in 1947 near Frankston, Victoria, aged 76 years.

    James Henry Gregory was the nephew of Charles Dickson Gregory.

    Arthur Victor Gregory was born in 1867 in Melbourne, the third son of George Frederick Gregory, from his second marriage. He took over his father's Gregory Studios in South Melbourne and worked there as a marine painter from the late nineteenth century. He died in Melbourne in 1957.

  • Scope and Content
    The collection was compiled by C. Dickson Gregory and includes 31 albums of photographs, some from original paintings, and cuttings (v.1-31), 14 brochures (v.32-45) and one portfolio (v.46) containing 9 watercolours, 8 pencil drawings and 53 black & white, sepia and colour photographs.

    A contents list for the collection is filed at the Mitchell Library Special Collections reference shelf, together with an index to v.1-31, compiled by Vaughan Evans, and a detailed contents list for v.46.
