ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Allan [Ramsay Cunningham?] Hughan, was born ca. 1834 in England. He migrated with his mother and siblings to Australia, ca. 1851 and settled in Victoria. He had a maritime career and was Captain of the ship ‘Pilot’ and was shipwrecked in New Caledonia, in March 1870. His fourth daughter was born in Noumea, New Caledonia in 1871, where Hughan had set up a photography business. As Government Photographer he travelled over New Caledonia and the Isle of Pines. The collection contains images of the Communards who were thousands of political prisoners deported from France to New Caledonia after the Revolution of 1871. Hughan died in New Caledonia in 1883.
