  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Doody was sentenced to transportation for seven years at the Old Bailey, London on 10 December 1788 and arrived in New South Wales on 16 October 1791 on board the Admiral Barrington as part of the Third Fleet. On board was also Captain William Paterson who was immediately given command of the detachment on Norfolk Island. Doody was sent to Norfolk Island, as Paterson’s servant, arriving on 4 November 1791.

The drawings may have been made for Paterson, who collected and sent home botanical, geological and insect specimens for Sir Joseph Banks.

In 1794 Paterson discussed with Banks the publication of his memoranda on the natural history of Norfolk Island and referred to drawings by Doody.
John Doody left Norfolk Island on 9 March 1793 on board the Kitty.

In 1795, while Acting Administrator of the Colony, Paterson granted Doody 30 acres of land in an area originally named Doody’s Bay. It is now known as Gladesville. No further record of John Doody can be found in the Musters from 1800 onwards or any record of his death.
