Scope and Content
The content of the sketchbook depicts rural scenes and views of London and Wales drawn during one of Glover’s tours. “On the evidence of dated sketchbooks and by noting the first appearance of Newcastle, Durham and the Lake District in 1805, South Wales, Kent in 1807 Wales again in 1808, Wales and Surrey in 1809 ... In sketchbook 70 he gives a list of towns and distance travelled (1,388 miles)”.

General note

The sketchbook is bound in dark brown leather with brass clasp. The front cover is nearly detached and the rear cover fully detached. Laid paper shows five horizontal chain lines, watermark includes WDA; 18--; coronet with fleur de lisle over a shield. It appears to be largely complete with about 12 sketches missing.

This order of sketches follows the course of the tour. At present the Mitchell Library catalogue describes the work by page, 1-148 starting from the end with the sketchbook inscription. The description kept with the sketchbook starts from the opposite end and works by sketch number 1-99. Within this sketch numbering system some of the numeration is backwards. This latter system reflects the numbers which appear with the sketches, quite possibly put there by Glover. It appears that the sketchbook numbering should really begin at the opposite end of where the number `70’ appears in the volume.
