  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Leonarder (1884-1978) was the son of George J.H. & Charlotte M. Leonarder. He worked on the Burrinjuck Dam and took photographs. He was involved in designing the needle valve of the gates of the Dam but received no credit for this job. In 1917 he married Lizzie Madsen.

  • Scope and Content
    The collection is chiefly of Burrinjuck town, the dam being constructed and shortly after it filled. There are pictures of the old Taemas Bridge being dismantled and the new bridge (nos 4-5), George Leonarder working on a lathe in the dam workshop (no 8), dam construction (various), the hospital (nos 12-13), the official’s residence (no.14), lighters to bring sand to the site (nos 31-32) and to collect timber for the site (nos 33-34), Burrinjuck town’s small dam (nos 36-38,39A), Narengullen and Garys Caves (nos 38-40), Cathedral Rocks (no.40), P class locomotive for Prince of Wales’ train (no.42) and the Dam’s narrow gauge railway (nos 43-53)

  • Conservation note

    25 nitrate negatives copied and destroyed because of unstable medium. The photographs are prints of the negatives.
    Photograph and negative nos correspond but the negative sequence is incomplete where the originals were nitrate. Some of the photographs have duplicate numbers but original numbering retained.
