    1 album (14 drawings in pencil (9), pencil and crayon (4), and ink and watercolour (1), mounted on alternate leaves) - sizes range from 18.4 x 31 cm. to 33 x 143 cm. in album 37.5 x 58.5 cm.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Eugene von Guerard, painter and teacher, was born in November 1811 in Vienna. He studied in Dusseldorf and travelled in Germany and Italy before arriving in Victoria in 1852. He visited the Ballarat goldfields and later travelled in Victoria, N.S.W, S.A. and Tas. In 1870 he was appointed Curator of the National Gallery of Victoria and Principal of its Art School where he remained until his retirement in 1881.
  • Scope and Content
    14 drawings in album (red morocco and red patterned buckram with gold tooling and lettering) titled Von Guerard / Apollo Bay and Cape Otway. Some drawings comprise separate sheets pasted together and folded.

    Pencil inscriptions place names, and dates. Drawings are titled, and all are dated, except f. 2; all unsigned. Some drawings have extensive notes (in German). Titles are also in Sir William Dixson’s [?] hand, on mount at lower right.
