    2 volumes - 16 mounted drawings in ink and wash, 1 with watercolour - sizes range from 33.5 x 50 cm. to 44.5 x 89.5 cm. in boxes 96 x 52 cm.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Eugene von Guerard, painter and teacher, was born in November 1811 in Vienna. He studied in Dusseldorf and travelled in Germany and Italy before arriving in Victoria in 1852. He visited the Ballarat goldfields and later travelled in Victoria, N.S.W, S.A. and Tas. In 1870 he was appointed Curator of the National Gallery of Victoria and Principal of its Art School where he remained until his retirement in 1881.
  • Collection history
    Sir William Dixson acquired this collection of drawings from the Australian bookseller, Albert Henry Spencer. Spencer sent the drawings to Dixson for his approval from London in 1937. Reference: Albert Henry Spencer, letters to Sir William Dixson, invoices, receipts etc., 2 September to 28 July 1952 (DLADD 889/no. 73)

    All drawings except f. 9 are signed, most are dated, ff. 1; 5-7; 9; 11; 14-15 are titled by the artist. Titles in parentheses are taken from pencil inscriptions on former mounts. ff. 2-5; 8; 10; 16 were possibly titled by Sir William Dixson.
