  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Clive Lesley Osborne Armstrong (1881-1952), an engineer, was a member of the Sydney Philatelic Club (now Royal Sydney Philatelic Club). He developed a special interest in the stamps of New South Wales, and in particular the ‘Diadem’ issues of 1856-1862. He corresponded with world renowned collectors in his field and contributed to the knowledge of this complex issue with its many plate flaws and retouches.     BOX 1
    A general collection of N.S.W. stamps from 1850-1870’s mounted in the original fine quality loose leaf album. Includes early essays, covers and the 1871 Telegraph stamps. Includes ‘Sydney views’, ‘Laureates’ and ‘Diadems’

    A specialised collection of the imperforate 2d blue ‘Diadem’ stamps 1856-1860 with examples of the ‘blistered’ printing plate and the retouches, the 1859 lithographic transfer of the plate, plus many used examples of the various shades (remounted on pages in one box).

    BOX 3
    A specialised collection of the perforated 2d blue ‘Diadem’ stamps of 1860-1862, including retouches and one copy of the error ‘printed on watermark ‘1’ paper’ (remounted on pages in one box)

    Two printed books and an envelope containing certificates from the Expert Committee of the Royal Philatelic Society, London. The printed books are: ‘The history of New Zealand Stamps with illustrations’ and New Zealand : a philatelic handbook’

    Contents list and photocopies of original pages with stamps in place is shelved with the collection.
