    Robert William (Bob) Connell (b. 1944), sociologist, was the foundation Professor of Sociology at Macquarie University, 1976-1991, before his appointment to the Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University. A History Honours graduate from the University of Melbourne in 1966, he undertook postgraduate research in the Department of Government, Sydney University. He completed his PhD in 1970 and lectured from 1971-1972. Connell had been a leading student activist against the Vietnam War and published a book of poems on the conflict, Firewinds (1968). He also co-founded the Free U (Sydney Free University), a radical, off-campus movement to change teaching methods and content, particularly in tertiary education. He was Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Flinders University, 1973-1975.

    Connell is well known for his research on class, gender and education. His research projects, including collaborations, have featured children’s political thought, 1966-1969; Sydney adolescents, 1968-1974; Class Structure in Australian History, a major contribution in the Australian sociology of class; school, home and work, 1977-184; theory of gender; the state in sexual politics; transformations of masculinity and the education of boys; and Social Aspects of the Prevention of AIDS (SAPA), established in 1986. He is the author and co-author of a number books, including Politics of the Extreme Right: Warringah 1966 (1967), The Child’s Construction of Politics (1971), Twelve to Twenty: A Study of Teenagers in Sydney (1975), Ruling Class, Ruling Culture: Studies of Conflict, Power and Hegemony in Australian Life (1977), Socialism and Labor: An Australian Strategy (1978), Class Structure in Australian History: Documents, Narrative and Argument (1980), Making the Difference: Schools, Families and Social Division (1982), Which Way Is Up? Essays on Sex, Class and Culture (1983), Teachers' Work (1985), and Gender and Power: Society, the Person and Sexual Politics (1987).

    Connell served on the editorial board of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Sociology, 1973-1975, and was President of the Australian Sociological Association, 1987-1988.
