First Chief Justice of Australia, born in Wales, came to Australia, 1854. Called to the Queensland Bar 1867, became M.L.A. 1874. Premier of Queensland, 1883-1888 and 1890-1893, when he became Chief Justice of Queensland. Became Chief Justice of Australia when the High Court was constituted, 1903
