  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    During 1902-1921 Lambert lived in London and provided illustrations for London magazines, such as, Cassells, Strand and Pall Mall. From 1905 to 1913 he took a studio at 2 Rossetti Studios, Flood Street, Chelsea, where many of these illustrations were drawn.
  • Scope and Content
    f.1 - Natives and two white men struggling in boat. Illustration for "The Trials of Commander McTurk" by Charles John Hyne. Also appeared in Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Feb. 1906, p. 165, titled as "Gripped the Englishman with the quickness of a professional fighter".
    f.2 - Ship's officer and lady. Illustration for Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Mar. 1906, p. 329, titled as "So you're after the Margherita pearls, are you, Lucy?".
    f.3 - Two ladies and two gentlemen in evening dress on a balcony. Illustrations for "The Trials of Commander McTurk" by Charles Hyne. Also appeared in Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Jan. 1906, p. 53, titled as "Commander J.K. McTurk went down on to his knees on the gravel and fumbled in the dusk".
    f.4 - Back view of man in shirt. Illustration for Cassell's Magazine, Dec 1900-May 1901, p. 633, titled as "The ghostly door: Back view of man in shirt".
    f.5 - Man on camp bed. Illustration for Cassell's Magazine, Dec 1900-May 1901, p. 633, titled as "The ghostly door: Man on camp bed". This illustration, together with f.4, were illustrated for Henry Lawson's story, 'The ghostly door'.
    f.6 - Three natives, white man and Eastern veiled lady. Illustration for Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Feb. 1906, p. 169, titled as "In an instant Commander McTurk was ringed with a bristle of steel".
    f.7 - Cover design for Mr. A.H. Adam's "London Streets", 1906.
    f.8 - Lady and gentleman conversing over table - white cat in the foreground. Illustration for Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Jan. 1906, p. 63, titled as "Would you like me to say over again the remark you objected to just now."
    f.9 - Initial design letter 'T'. Illustration for "Two Awheel" by Arthur Jose.

    f.15 - Man examining silver through eyeglass. Possibly a sketch for "The Blue Hat". Also appeared in Strand Magazine, Vol. 29, Apr. 1905, p. 414, titled as "The last professional incident". Was also used as an illustration for "The moth and the star" by E.W. Hornung.
    f.16 - White man carrying native on back. Illustration for Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Feb. 1906, p. 167, titled as "The elbow-joint snapped with the noise of breaking faggots and the man screamed like a child".
    f.17 - Ship's mutiny : crew attacking officers. Illustration for Pall Mall magazine, Vol. 37, Mar. 1906, p. 329, titled as "Then the mob made an irresistible rush". Also appeared in "The Trials of Commander McTurk" by Charles John Hyne.
    f.18 - Pencil sketch of sleeping man : on fly leaf of which is a poem entitled "Dreaming", [ca 1897]. Inscribed: "The Breaker, horse poet shot for complicity in Boer murder affair sketched at Richmond NSW, Hawkesbury River, accompanying poem or verse written at about same time". Has accompanying poem written by Harry Harbourd Morant, titled "Dreaming", and dated 31st December 1897.
    f.19 - Pack horse bolting : also showing emus.
    f.20 - Hunter with gun stalking kangaroo.
    f.21 - Man, woman and dog outside "Kings Head" public house, [ca 1903]
