  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur Wilberforce Jose, (1863-1934), journalist and historian, was born on 4th September, 1863 at Clifton, Bristol, England. Due to ill health he came to Australia in 1882, often living rough, he cut wood for the Victorian Railways, picked hops and apples, made bricks and tutored in Tasmania. Jose's first major work, 'The Growth of the Empire', was published in Sydney in 1897. His 'A Short History of Australasia' appeared in 1899; with added chapter on literature it became his 'History of Australasia', ran to fifteen editions by 1929 and was translated into French. An early member of the (Royal) Australian Historical Society, he frequently contributed to its 'Journal and Proceedings' and wrote for other magazines. Almost half of 'New South Wales-Historical and Economic' (1912) was his. He was appointed editor-in-chief of 'The Australian Encyclopaedia' (1925, 1926) in 1920. Jose died in Brisbane Hospital of peritonitis on 22 January 1934 and was buried in Toowong cemetery.
    George Washington Lambert (1873-1930), artist, was born on 13 September 1873 at St Petersburg. The family migrated, reaching Sydney on 20 January 1887. Lambert died on 29 May 1930 at Cobbity, near Camden. He was buried in the Anglican section of South Head cemetery. Australian Dictionary of Biography online edition.
  • General note

    Drawing has been identified as Jose by Mrs. Jose (see PXn225). Jose became Lambert's brother-in-law when he married Amy Lambert's sister, Evelyn. Jose travelled to London in 1903, where he published his work, 'Two awheel', illustrated by Lambert, (see ML 981/J and PXA 2373). Jose also contributed an introductory essay on Lambert for 'The Art of George W. Lambert', (1924).
