John Cleary, author and broadcaster, was born in Melbourne in 1948, joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Perth in 1980. He was the staff-elected director of the ABC Board, 1988-1992, and Federal President of the ABC Staff Union, including its precursor the Australian Broadcasting Commission Staff Association. He was Deputy National President of the Public Sector Union, 1989-1991.
