  • General note

After 40 years as a commercial photographer, Anthony Browell broke with high technology photography and constructed a 10x8 inch pinhole camera. These are examples of his lensless images, highly regarded as the best Australian examples in this difficult medium. He photographed a group of well-known photographers at Ian Dodd's 70th birthday party and a series of portraits in Hyde Park. These examples have been selected to show specific attributes of pinhole photography, including infinite depth of field, extreme wide angle and lengthy exposures. The photograph at Ian Dodd's birthday took 6 seconds and the lengthy exposure in Hyde Park compares favourably with nineteenth century images of the same subject and helps explain the nature and "look" of early photography. -- Mitchell file
