  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lambert had met Major General Sir Granville Ryrie in 1918, while serving as an official war artist in Palestine during the First World War. Following his return to Australia in 1921, he first visited the Ryrie property Micalago, near Canberra, in January 1922, and became a regular visitor there over the following years. Lambert also met Sir Harry Chauvel in Palestine, where Chauvel was Commander of the Desert Mounted Corps. It was Chauvel who requested Lambert to paint the battlescene of Beersheba, resulting in the painting, 'The Charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba, 1917'.

  • General note

The Mitchell Picture Card Catalogue has identified the men as Chauvel and Ryrie. Identification for these men has also been confirmed from drawings by Lambert held at the Australian War Memorial. But it is also possible that the sitter is not Chauvel but is Mr. Campbell Gibson, the owner of Tirranna in the 1920s. The images have been identified as being preliminary paintings for the George Lambert painting 'The Tirranna Picnic Race Meeting, 1929', where the sitter is identified as Campbell Gibson. ML MSS 97/11 p. 207 has listing of 'G.W. Lambert Estate, drawings and paintings ...'. This image is listed as No. 145 'N. Gibson & Sir G. Ryrie'. Source: George W.
