D.H. Souter was for many years a cartoonist and illustrator for the Bulletin.

Typescript manuscript of a bush ballad, signed by Souter, with extensive sub-editing by J.F. Archibald and subsequent re-working by Souter. The final printed version differs substantially from the original typescript first presented to Archibald by Souter. The verso of the last page is annotated : 'Orig. copy subbed by J.F. Archibald'.
Published version of Barney's Bull, Sydney, William Brooks & Co., no date. An 8 page pamphlet privately published by Souter. In a preliminary note he states: 'Because of the interest the late J.F. Archibald took in these lines; because they were among the last which he sub-edited, and because he was among the first to take a practical interest in my work, I have had this revised reprint made from "Smith's Weekly"'. The cover illustration is by Stan Cross.

The printed pamphlet bears watermark 'T H Saunders 1916'.
