  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

“During the late 20s and early 30s [Harry Freeman] was involved in press work, fashion (his love) and portraiture. He was also involved with some of Australia’s early motion pictures, such as Dad and Dave in Cinerama with producer Ken Hall, through to Rats of Tobruk, with the late Charles Chauvel. Mr Freeman worked overseas firstly in America and Hollywood where as a guest photographer he met and photographed some of the all time greats of the now TV reruns. Later in New York he was involved in fashion. After moving to England, he went to work on Fleet St. Mr Freeman was later posted to a Paris bureau, which enabled him to move from place to place and he was involved in the major happenings of those times. Up to the outbreak of World War II, he had photographed every crowned and uncrowned Head of State in Europe with the exception of Stalin and Franco. After he returned to Australia at the outbreak of war, he joined the AIF. Mr Freeman was sent to Japan and became responsible for all the still and motion picture records of the British Commonwealth of Nations, after which he returned to Australia and picked up the threads of earlier times. Mr Freeman retired in 1975. He is recognised by all photographers as truly a father of photographic art in Australia.” – “Two week display by photographer”, The Queensland Times, Friday, February 13, 1981, p.7 [with portrait of Harry Freeman, aged approx. 70]
