'This conservation management plan has been prepared for the Board of Management of the Great Synagogue by Orwell & Peter Phillips in accordance weith the Burra Charter of Australia ICOMOS [1999]. It documents the history and development of the Synagogue from its construction in the 1870s. The plan assesses the cultural significance of the present building, and identifies elements of greater and lesser cultural significance. On the basis of this, policies are recommended for the conservation of significant elements and attributes of the place, and control of new development...The previous edition of this conservation management plan was written in August 1999 and revised in January 2000 following comments from the Australian Heritage Commission and additional historical research by Susan Bures. The conservation management plan has now been updated to reflect additional documentary and physical evidence discovered, and conservation and other works undertaken, since that time.' 'This conservation management plan has been written by Peter Phillips, with additional historical research provided by Mrs Susan Bures [Administrator of the Great Synagogue, Sydney]. Plans of the existing building were prepared by Orwell Phillips in 1991. A number of copyright illustrations have been used with permission of the Mitchell Library, State of New South Wales.'
