  • General note

PXD 1008/vol 3 is a catalogue compiled privately on behalf of a previous owner of the collection of artworks by Major James Wallis subsequently acquired by the Mitchell Library. Information in it has not been verified by the Mitchell Library. It records all of the drawings as being "from an album assembled in 1866 by his [Wallis's] widow Mary Ann Wallis", but the Mitchell Library's cataloguing of the works has established that the collection of artworks originates from two albums (catalogued as PXD 1008/vol 1 and vol 2). In PXD 1008/vol 3 some artworks are documented in a framed state; all were acquired unframed by the Mitchell Library. PXD 1008/vol 3 identifies initials on the verso of "View from Sundays Well of St. Barrs Church and the Bishops Palace near Cork" (PXD 1008/vol 1 f.21) as those of Wallis's widow, but comparison with other inscriptions in this collecton by the Mitchell Library does not support this (see notes to Inscriptions, PXD 1008/vol 1). Mitchell Library catalogue records of PXD 1008/vol 1 and PXD 1008/vol 2 note specific instances where Mitchell Library cataloguing differs from that in PXD 1008/vol 3
