  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Skinner Prout, (1805-1876), artist, was born on 19 December 1805 at Plymouth, England. He arrived with his wife and seven children in Sydney on 14 December, 1840. He brought a complete lithographic printing press with him, and in early 1841 he started producing lithographed versions of his drawings of Sydney. In August 1842, the first part of 'Sydney Illustrated' was printed, followed by the second part, in November 1842. Due to a shortage of lithographic materials, the local press in mid 1843 recommended that local artists cease all attempts at producing lithographic views. Prout appears to have responded to this suggestion and suspended his work. 'Sydney Illustrated' was later recommenced and completed in 1844. • General note

A full description of the image has been given by John Rae in 'Sydney illustrated', ML Q981.1/P. In his description he states, "The view is taken from Fort Phillip hill, a little to the south-west of the Flag Staff; and the spectator, to understand the drawing properly must be supposed to be looking, in a north-easterly direction, from the elevation where the goats are feeding, on a scene considerably beneath his eye". The road running across the picture is Kent Street, leading to the Lord Nelson Hotel. Also visible is the new Argyle Street, (the path crossing Kent Street in front of the Lord Nelson), and Albion House, (to the left of the Windmill). This lithograph was No. 3 in Part I of the four part series of 'Sydney illustrated'.
