  • Scope and Content
    Goldmining in New Guinea
New Guinea, as its name suggests, has always been famous for its gold, but it remained for Australian enterprise in the 1920-30 decade to place New Guinea among the great gold producing countries of the world.
The above photographs are part of the Waterhouse collection of photographs chiefly of the Morobe gold field.
The early pioneers on this field suffered great hardships for the field is a huge jungle clad plateau ringed round with chains of mountains. Between the field and the coast lie mountains, dense jungles and miasmic swamps. It was the organisation of a remarkable aeroplane service which made possible the development of the gold industry. The first flight to the field was made in 1927 and was the conception of the late C.J. Levien, whose vision and enterprise were important factors in the early history of the great Morobe field. -- Typescript introduction to handwritten contents list attached to photographs originally numbered 1-155 (no.127 is missing) and panoramas numbered 156-166. The numbering has been retained and the contents list is filed with the photographs.
