  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Pomeroy, public servant and historian, was born in Sydney in 1937 and attended Scots College, Bellevue Hill. He graduated BA and MA (History) and PhD (History) from the University of Sydney. He was President of the Sydney University Conservative Association, 1958-1963. In 1961 he enrolled in a Summer Course in German at the University of Cologne. He joined the Commonwealth Public Service in 1962 and served chiefly with the Departments of Foreign Affairs (formerly External Affairs), Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, Film Censorship Board and the Australian Electoral Commission. In 1988 Pomeroy published a bibliography on the 18th century British liberal politician Charles James Fox (1749-1806).

    Include papers concerning service with the Commonwealth Department of External Affairs, 1962-1967; Commonwealth Film Censorship Board, 1980-1981; and Australian Electoral Commission, 1984-1993; minute book of the Sydney University Conservative Association, 1958-1963; papers concerning the Movement for the Ordination of Women, 1963-1995; and his Australian Labor Party candidacy for the electoral division of Bradfield at the 1972 Federal Elections; research material on various projects, including The Magi, and for his MA thesis: 'The Apostasy of James Normington Rawling', 1988, and PhD thesis: 'Morale on the Homefront in Australia during the Second World War', 1995; volume of selected writings by and about Francis James, compiled by his son, Alfred James; and personal and family photographs.
