Magda Neeld was once billed as the Australian star of song. She began her career with the Sydney Operatic Eisteddfod and later worked with the La Scala Milan and Covent Garden operas while based in Sydney. She later performed in London and New York with the encouragement of the entrepreneur Jack Hylton but returned to Australia in 1939 after suffering back problems. She remained in Australia during the war, performing at musical events and later returned to the US to marry an American serviceman. She arrived in San Francisco in June 1945 while Allied governments were finalising the United Nations Charter. Magda attended the conference and later composed a UN song which is sung at UN events "Song of All Nations".
