  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jane Bennett is a Sydney artist whose work focuses on the industrial side of Sydney, especially the Harbour foreshore and Harbour islands. She documents the disappearance or transformation of much of Sydney's industrial landscape.
She has been a finalist in the Sulman, Wynne and Dobell Prizes.
  • Scope and Content
This work has been painted from the Harbour Control Tower, Merriman Street. It has been painted by courtesy of the Sydney Ports Corporation. It depicts East Darling Harbour, an area known in the 1930s and 1940s as The Hungry Mile. The New South Wales Government plans to rezone the area and develop it into a new city precinct. In October 2006, a State-wide naming competition was held to rename the area. A Competition Jury (consisting of The Hon. Paul Keating, Ms Elizabeth Anne Macgregor and Ms Margy Osmond) was appointed and on 18 October 2006, Barangaroo was announced as the new name for East Darling Harbour. The name was to honour the wife of Bennelong. -- Director General's Environmental Assessment Report, February 2007. '
