  Untitled. The title was assigned when the work was shown in the 1870 Intercolonial Exhibition in Sydney where it was on sale for 60 guineas. The Sydney Morning Herald art review commented at the time `The sunset scene ... is a beautiful painting but rather highly coloured' -- Australian Colonial Art Exhibition.
• General note
  
  The artist has chosen to assimilate views from two different locations: cabbage tree palms at American Creek, near Wollongong on the left hand side of the work and granite rocks at Hartley in the Blue Mountains on the right. It is based on drawings done in situ on von Geurard's only trip to New South Wales -- Australian Colonial Art Exhibition.
  This composite work, incorporates features from two pencil sketches plaeced at DG*D17, f.27 entitled `Granite stones at Hartley, 1859' and f.28 entitled `Amerikan Creek, Wollongong, 1859' -- Mitchell card catalogue
