  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Hope, of Messrs Fleming and Hope, brokers of Glasgow, Scotland, and Mary Reibey were first cousins. Mary Reibey was born Molly Haydock in England in 1777. David Hope was born in 1786. He was five years old when Molly was sentenced and transported to Botany Bay for seven years for stealing a horse. She arrived in Australia in 1792. Little is known of her life during the two years following her arrival until her marriage to Sydney Thomas Reibey, a junior marine officer, on 1 September 1794. The Reibeys had seven children : Thomas II (1796-1842), James I (1798-1844), George (1801-1823), Celia (1803-1823), Eliza (1805-1870), Jane Penelope (1807-1854), and Elizabeth (1810-1855).
At the time of his death in 1811, Thomas Reibey was a successful businessman and landowner. His business activities extended from the Hunter to Bass Strait, and Tahiti. Following her husband's death Mary Reibey took over and extended the family's business activities, accumulating land in New South Wales and Tasmania. In 1820 she made a visit to England with her elder daughters, Celia and Eliza. Among the many cousins and other relatives whom she met were David Hope and his sister Alice Atkin (1790-1854). Mary Reibey, her children and grandchildren were regular correspondents of David Hope and the Hope family. Mary Reibey died in Newtown, Sydney, in 1855, predeceased by five of her children. David Hope died unmarried in 1857.
